Taft Avenue Sewer Improvement Project
Crews continue making steady progress on the Taft Avenue Sewer Improvement Project, moving east toward Tustin Street. This vital upgrade will modernize aging sewer infrastructure to support the community’s future growth and evolving needs.
Current Work
Location: Taft Avenue from Glassell Street to Shaffer Street
When: Ongoing through end of July. *
Hours: Mon. – Fri.; 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.*
Crews are nearing completion of sewer construction along Taft Avenue between Glassell Street and Shaffer Street. This includes critical intersection work at Shaffer Street and Taft Avenue, which is essential for connecting key segments of the new sewer line stretching from Glassell Street to Shaffer Street and beyond.
Construction and detours at the Taft Avenue and Shaffer Street intersection are expected to be completed on the week of July 7. By the end of July, traffic control along this first stretch of Taft Avenue will be removed, following will be street re-striping that will then allow for street restoration and the return of on-street parking.
Location: Taft Avenue from Shaffer Street to Cambridge Street
When: Ongoing for about 3 months. *
Hours: Mon. – Fri.; 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.*
This phase of construction includes installing a bypass system at the intersection of Taft Avenue and Cambridge Street that will last approximately 4-5 weeks*. For the safety of our crews, detours will be in place until work in the intersection is completed. (See map below)
Once the bypass is complete, crews will begin trenching to gain access and upgrade the pipeline between Shaffer Street and Cambridge Street. K-rail and delineators will be set up along Taft Avenue between Shaffer Street and Cambridge Street, to provide safe access to the pipeline located in the median. Work between Shaffer Street and Cambridge Street is expected to take approximately three months. Additional updates will be shared as the project progresses. *
We expect to reach the intersection of Taft Avenue and Tustin Street in Fall of 2025*. We appreciate the community’s continued patience and cooperation as we complete this important infrastructure improvement.
Project Impacts:
- Detours and turn restrictions will be in place for intersection work – follow posted signs.
- Crosswalks may be closed intermittently during work, so please follow signs.
- No street parking along the work area.
- At least one lane will remain open for east and westbound traffic.
- Bus stops along Taft Ave. will be impacted during construction. Visit www.octa.net for details.
- Increased activity, dust, and noise are expected near the construction zone.
*All dates and times are subject to change due to operational factors or inclement weather.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to improve critical regional infrastructure.
Project Description:Â
The Taft Avenue Sewer Improvement Project will replace and relocate a portion of the Taft Sewer in the City of Orange.
This project will upsize almost two miles of pipe along Taft Avenue from Glassell Street to Sacramento Street, northbound on Sacramento Street to Brentford Avenue, to Breckenridge Street to Meats Avenue. The current pipe ranges between 12 to 15 inches and will be upsized to 18 to 21 inches.
A portion of the sewer that currently runs along Tustin Street will be relocated to North Sacramento Street where there is more room to install a larger pipe and facilitates the future maintenance of the pipeline.
